An e-bike ride and hike to Diamond Head

You ride an e-bike from Waikiki past Kapiolani Park and along the coast to the crater, then a guide hikes to the summit with you. It's the one Diamond Head tour where the same person leads you all the way, in a group of six riders at most.

Electric Bike Ride & Diamond Head Hike

About this experience

808eVentures runs this from its activity shop in the lobby of the Kuhio Village Tower, 2463 Kuhio Ave. You get an e-bike and a helmet, and guests say the helmets have built-in speakers and microphones, so you hear the guide while riding. The route passes Kapiolani Park and Makalei Beach Park on the way to Diamond Head, with photo stops the guide picks. Most reviews name Ryan as the guide; some mention Dave.

The itinerary gives about an hour at Diamond Head, and the guide climbs with you. That's quicker than a shuttle's 90 minutes to two hours, but you're not left to work out the trail alone, and the guide takes photos of your group at the top. Several guests mention a shave ice stop on the ride back. The whole trip lasts about 3.5 hours.

The fine print matters here. Riders must be 15 to 75, and teens under 18 ride with an adult. The weight limit is 275 lb, and the operator says people under 5 feet may find the bikes harder to handle. Wear closed-toe shoes, no long dresses or skirts. Booking is confirmed within 48 hours, not instantly. And be on time: arriving more than 15 minutes late without approval cancels your spot with no refund.

  • A guide on the ride and on the hike
  • Six riders at most; some guests ended up on a private tour
  • Helmets with speakers, guests say, so you hear the commentary
  • Diamond Head hiking ticket included
  • Photos taken for you along the way

What guests say

★★★★★

Ryan is an excellent tour guide. He gave us helmets with comms so we could all hear his narration as he took us along Waikiki beach. I definitely felt like we got a locals view of the area. He also takes fabulous photos at the best locations.

You should feel confident in your ebike riding skills as Waikiki is busy. [...] The hike was fairly steep but worth the sore calf muscles I had the next day. If you are moderately fit don't hesitate to do this bike and hike of Diamond Head Crater. It was on my bucket list and this 68 yr old grandma is so thrilled to have done this tour.

It was our first time on an e-bike, but they are pretty easy for someone who has a bit of bicycle experience, even for active seniors. Ryan paced the hike up to Diamond Head so we had periodic rest stops. He took lots of photos, which he made available to us.

I was traveling solo & I was the only person to show up for the bike/hike. They could have easily canceled because it was just me. but... They did not!!

Tips before you book

  • Arrive 15 minutes early. Late arrivals beyond 15 minutes lose the booking without a refund.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes that work for both riding and stairs, and leave long skirts at the hotel.
  • Bring a water bottle and sunscreen. The ride and the climb are both exposed to the sun.
  • If you're under 5 feet tall, mention it when booking. The operator says shorter riders can find the bikes harder.
  • Wait for the confirmation email: it can take up to 48 hours.

Yes. Unlike the shuttle tours, the same guide rides and hikes with your group. The itinerary gives about an hour at Diamond Head, and guests say the guide sets rest stops and takes photos at the top.

Is the Diamond Head hiking ticket included?

Yes, the hiking ticket is part of the price. You don't need your own reservation from gostateparks.hawaii.gov.

What are the age and weight limits?

Do I need e-bike experience?

No, but you should be able to ride a normal bicycle. Guests on their first e-bike say they found them easy after the briefing, and one 68-year-old wrote that it was on her bucket list. Compare it with the pedal-bike option in our bike and e-bike guide.
