Bike and e-bike tours

The only Diamond Head tours where a guide walks up with you start on two wheels. Here is how the e-bike tour and the pedal-and-lunch tour compare, and who should pick which.

Booking choice: The e-bike ride and hike, from $199 per person. Check dates Tour details

Shuttle tours drop you at the trailhead and wait. The two bike tours on this site do something different: a guide leads a small group out of Waikiki by bike, past Kapiolani Park and the coast, then hikes up the crater with you and takes the photos. They cost four to five times more than a shuttle, and guests rate them higher than anything else in the list.

Details below come from the two listings and their reviews, checked in October 2026, plus Hawaii's e-bike rules updated in July 2026.

The quick answer

Two tours: the 808eVentures e-bike ride and hike ($199, 3.5 hours, max 6 riders, ages 15 to 75, entry included) and Bike Tour Hawaii's bike to hike with lunch ($169, 4 hours from 7 a.m., 7-speed city bikes, max 10, lunch included). Pick the e-bike for an easy ride and a tiny group; pick the pedal tour for exercise, lunch and a guide guests call a local legend. Either way, a guide climbs with you.

What bike tours go to Diamond Head?

Two on this site: an e-bike ride and hike from Kuhio Avenue ($199) and a pedal bike tour with lunch from Kuhio Beach ($169). Both include a guided hike to the summit.

How does the Diamond Head e-bike tour work?

You meet in the Kuhio Village Tower lobby, ride e-bikes past Kapiolani Park and Makalei Beach Park to the crater, hike up with the guide for about an hour, and ride back.

Rides go in groups of six or fewer, and several guests ended up with a private tour. The guide (Ryan in most reviews) sets the e-bike up for you first. One rider wrote: "He gave us helmets with comms so we could all hear his narration as he took us along Waikiki beach." Another: "The ebikes were in great shape and made the uphill roads a breeze."

Guests also mention historic homes along the route, plenty of photos taken for you, and a shave ice stop on the way back. Two rules matter. Confirmation can take up to 48 hours. And arriving more than 15 minutes late without the operator's approval counts as a same-day cancellation, with no refund.

How does the bike to hike tour with lunch work?

You meet at 7 a.m. at the Kuhio Beach bike racks, ride a 7-speed bike past the zoo and the coast to Diamond Head, hike for about 1.5 hours with the guide, then eat lunch near the crater.

The itinerary lists short stops at the Honolulu Zoo, Makalei Beach Park and Shangri La (Doris Duke's estate, seen from outside), then the hike. Kelly, the guide in most reviews, has lived in Hawaii for over 40 years according to his guests. One wrote: "one local even yelled out as we rode past, “Kelly’s a legend!”" Bikes carry speakers so you hear the commentary.

Lunch is a local spot; guests mention fish tacos and curry chicken in papaya at the Market Grill. A vegetarian option is available if you ask at booking, and the tour runs in all weather. One point to check: the listing says the operator pays the $5 state park fee, but an older note on the same listing asks guests to register on the state site themselves. Ask the operator after booking which applies to your date.

E-bike or regular bike: which is harder?

The e-bike is easier on the hills; the regular bike gets you a real workout on the climb up Diamond Head Road. Neither ride is long.

The route from Waikiki is flat along the park and the coast, then climbs up to the crater entrance. On a 7-speed city bike that climb is honest work. One guest on the pedal tour, who trains daily, called the ride "very easy and pleasant and has a few slightly challenging uphill parts but definitely doable." Another, who hadn't ridden since college, made it with the guide's encouragement.

The e-bike takes the hills out of it, but you need confidence in traffic. A 68-year-old guest advised: "You should feel confident in your ebike riding skills as Waikiki is busy." First-timers on e-bikes say they got used to them quickly. Either way, the hike is the same 560 feet; see how hard the hike is.

Who can ride on the Diamond Head bike tours?

E-bike riders must be 15 to 75 (15 to 18 with an adult), under 275 lb, in closed-toe shoes. The pedal tour takes ages 12 to 85.

  • E-bike tour: riders 15 to 75, under-18s with an adult. Maximum rider weight 275 lb. No minimum height, but the operator says people under 5 feet find e-bikes harder. Closed-toe shoes; no long dresses or skirts.
  • Bike to hike: youth 12 to 17, adults 18 to 60, seniors 61 to 85. Not recommended in pregnancy or with back or heart trouble.
  • State law: a Hawaii law signed in July 2026 tightened e-bike rules: riders under 18 must wear a helmet, and Class 2 and 3 e-bikes need a rider of 16 or older to ride unsupervised (Hawaii News Now). On a guided tour with helmets provided, the guide handles that.

Families with kids under 12 should look at a shuttle or DIY trip instead.

Ages 12 to 85, a city bike, a guide who hikes with you and lunch to finish.

Can you bike to Diamond Head on your own?

Yes. Ride Biki or a rental bike from Waikiki and book a $5 entry-only reservation. Biki costs $5 per 30-minute ride, but the fleet has shrunk.

Cyclists enter the same way as walkers: through the Kahala Tunnel off Diamond Head Road, with an entry-only reservation from Go State Parks. Without the QR code you won't get past the booth.

Honolulu's Biki bike share charges $5 for a single 30-minute ride, and by April 2026 its fleet had fallen to 478 bikes from about 1,300 at its peak (Civil Beat). Finding a bike in Waikiki at 6 a.m. is not guaranteed, and Biki docks aren't set up for parking while you hike for 90 minutes. A DIY ride works best with a rental bike and a lock.

What you give up: the guide, the photos and the stories along the way. That is most of what guests rave about.

Is a bike tour worth $169 to $199?

If you want a guide, photos and exercise in one morning, yes. If you only want the summit, a $35 to $50 shuttle gets you there.

Per hour, the bike tours aren't far off the shuttles: about $42 to $57 an hour against $12 to $17 for a shuttle, but with a guide for the whole time instead of a driver waiting in the car park. Every guest review we quote here is 5 stars, and the e-bike tour holds a 5.0 rating.

Pick the e-bike if you want a private-feeling group, an easy ride and a midday or afternoon slot. Pick the pedal tour if you want a 7 a.m. start, actual cycling, and lunch included. One pedal-tour guest said what most of them say: "If you are a person who is relatively active, I would highly recommend doing a biking tour with Kelly!!"

What should you wear on a Diamond Head bike tour?

Closed-toe shoes you can hike in, shorts or trousers (no long skirts), sunscreen and sunglasses. Helmets are provided.

You ride and hike in the same shoes, so pick trainers with grip, not sandals. The e-bike listing bans long dresses and skirts for safety. Bring sunscreen: the coast road and the upper trail have little shade. The pedal tour hands out water and snacks; on the e-bike tour, one guest thanked the guide for water, but carry your own.

Morning departures are cooler. One e-bike guest in February said mornings are probably best for the hike, and the 7 a.m. pedal tour beats the heat by design.

Pedal from Kuhio Beach at 7 a.m., hike with a local guide, then lunch near the crater.
