Diamond Head Early Hike with Entry Reservation

About this experience

This is the first-in option. Pickup starts at 5:30 a.m. from one of 81 points in Waikiki, the time is reconfirmed the day before, and the van is at the crater for the 6:00 a.m. opening. All fees and taxes are included, plus bottled water, and flashlights are available for the dark start. A maximum of 20 guests ride.

About the sunrise: the listing itself promises a chance of a sunrise vista only from November to March, and that's honest. In Honolulu the sun comes up between about 6:34 and 7:11 a.m. in those months, so you can make the summit in time. From roughly May to August it rises around 5:50, before the gate even opens. One guest on the late-June run wrote it was already daylight at 6. You still beat the heat and most of the crowd, which is the real reason to book in summer.

The hike itself is self-guided. The driver explains the trail and its options before you set off, and guests say there's plenty of time to finish and take photos, but nobody walks with you. The listing also warns that it's not for claustrophobic travelers, because of the tunnel near the top.

  • A real chance of a summit sunrise from November to March
  • All fees and taxes included, plus bottled water
  • Flashlights available for the dark start
  • Pickup from 81 points, reconfirmed the day before

Pick up and drop off were perfect as well as getting early hike up to summit to see sunrise. Driver was wonderful!!

The bottom line on this experience is that you can probably hike Diamond Head more economically, but this package makes it super easy. You’ll be among the first in - which is a must because the “trail” and staircases are narrow - and you’ll get friendly tips on how long each of the three segments of the hike might reasonably take.

Plenty of time to complete the hike. Tour guide does not go on the hike but that is not needed -- he picked me up at my hotel, took pictures we requested at drop off site before hike started, and shared info about Waikiki on the way back. Perfect for what I needed.

Highly recommend the first tour of the day for the views and temperature. There is a short tunnel with minimal lighting so may need a flashlight if its dark outside or if it makes you nervous.

Tips before you book

  • Check the sunrise time for your date. In December it's around 6:52 to 7:00 a.m., in March 6:39 to 6:51.
  • Take a headlamp or the flashlight they offer. The lower trail is dark before dawn in winter.
  • Eat something small before pickup. There's no food on the trail; food trucks sit near the trailhead.
  • Bring a light layer for the summit wind, even in Hawaii.
  • Don't stop at the first lookout for sunrise if you have time. The view from the top is wider.
